wedding dress for vow renewalQ. Is it tacky for a 30th anniversary vow renewal for me to wear a wedding dress since we didn’t have a formal wedding when we got married? – Melissa

A. One of the beautiful things about a vow renewal is that there are no rules. You can absolutely wear a wedding dress to renew your vows – be it white, ivory, pink, red, or whatever you fancy. The days of white dresses being reserved for virgin or first-time brides are long gone, so you should feel free to wear any dress your heart desires. Here are some great couples dressed in all kinds of attire to inspire you as you make your vow renewal dress selection!

Hi Karie! What if I wanted to wear my original wedding dress—would that be “tacky”? Thanks in advance!

I think it’s absolutely wonderful to wear your original wedding dress for a vow renewal! In fact it’s very romantic. You can wear it exactly as you did the first time or give it a bit of an update.

Depending on the style and how many years it’s been since you wore it, you might update it a little with new accessories, a bit of color, or even have it shortened. For example, if your original dress was fairly plain, you might add some beading, flowers, or lace to it.

Adding color with silk flowers, big or small, can make a great statement. They can be sewn at the bust line, waist, or on the skirt of the dress. Or you might consider adding a sash in your favorite color.

For a sheath or mermaid style dress, it works wonderfully to have it shortened to cocktail length in many cases. Or perhaps adding a little lace jacket is more your style now? You can also add a little new personal flair to it with a new necklace, shoes, earring, etc.

Whether you opt to keep it just like it was on your wedding day or make some updates to it, wearing your original dress is a wonderful idea!
