Q. We want to have alcohol at our vow renewal reception, but don’t want to bust our budget. Do we have to have an open bar?

A. There is no disputing that having an open bar at a reception can be very expensive. It has the potential to be the single most costly element of your vow renewal. To keep the costs contained, you might consider having a limited cocktail hour followed by only wine with the meal, serve only signature cocktails for a limited time and then switch to nonalcoholic drinks, limit the bar to wine, beer, and champagne, or opt for only house brands of alcohol in the open bar.

Remember, it’s always better to limit the variety of beverages you offer then put guests in the unexpected position of having to pay for their drinks so steer clear of a cash bar. A gracious guest will always appreciate the hospitality, regardless of the variety of offerings!
